How to Fold a Dress Shirt

There's nothing worse than a wrinkled shirt. Especially if it's a muscle fit shirt that highlights your body shape.

It doesn't matter if you're wearing a cheap, off-the-rack shirt or an expensive, custom-made one: the fact is that wrinkles are never attractive. They make you look sloppy and unprofessional and can even end up making you look older than you really are.

Folding your dress shirt properly will help prevent it from wrinkling; ensuring you’re looking your best. It will also help extend the lifespan of your shirt, meaning they’ll looker newer for longer.

So whether you’re folding up your best dress shirt to pack it for your business trip, or are simply wanting to put it away neatly after a hard day’s work, keep reading to learn the best ways to fold up a dress shirt.

Once you get used to doing it right, there's no reason not to do it every time! The dreaded shirt wrinkles will be a thing of the past.

How Do You Fold a Dress Shirt Nicely?

You'll need a flat, dry surface that’s large enough for your shirt with the sleeves stretched out to the sides.

You'll also want to be sure that all of your clothes are clean and dry, as this will make it easier for them to keep their shape when folded. If they're still wet, hang them up to dry before you start folding!

Having clean clothes will also help prevent any stains from setting in while you're working on folding your shirt.

Is It Better to Fold or Hang Shirts?

Hanging shirts gives them more room to breathe and maintain their shape better than folding does. With hanging, you’ll also avoid wrinkling or creasing your shirt for the next time you come to wear it.

But if you don’t want to occupy valuable wardrobe space, or are saving that last hanger for your favourite coat, folding can be a convenient and practical alternative to hanging.

How Do You Fold a Formal Shirt Step by Step?

Folding a formal shirt is surprisingly simple!

Step 1: Lay your shirt front down on a flat and dry surface

When you're ready to start, lay your shirt front down on a flat and dry surface so that the sleeves are hanging straight to either side.

Step 2: How to fold dress shirt sleeves

Next, fold the sleeves in half so that they touch at the centre of the back of your shirt. Feel free to fold the sleeves back over themselves.

Make sure they'll stay folded this way—if they're too long, they'll just unfold again when you try to put your shirt into its case.

Step 3: Fold the body

Now fold over the bottom of your shirt so that it lines up with the top of the sleeves and meets in the middle of your back. This will form two layers: one for your body and one for each sleeve.

Step 4: Flip over

Lastly, flip over your shirt so that it's facing up again. Fold in half lengthwise so that it looks like an envelope or book cover—this will make sure everything is snugly packed together when you put it away!

How Do You Fold a Dress Shirt so They Don’t Wrinkle?

When following the above steps, make sure your shirt is evenly spread across your flat working area. Additionally, when you’re making each of the folds, make sure you apply a fair amount of tension – this will help prevent any wrinkles or creases.
